Getting back to school and the early morning rush can often lead to
compromised hygiene. What can you do as parents to make sure your
children are cleaning their teeth effectively? 2Tone Disclosing solution
is a wonderful tool to implement at home to use as a “check” to make sure your
munchkins are getting to all of the areas in their mouth. Simply
place a couple of drops on a q-tip and swab all over all of the teeth, rinse
and spit. Then inspect the colors. Pink= “new” plaque less than 24
hours old. Blue=”old” plaque over 24 hours old, where they have
consistently missing when cleaning. The areas that stain either color
should be flossed and brushed, when the plaque is removed, the stain will be
removed also. 2Tone is also great for children who are just learning to
brush without supervision, they can used the solution on their own before
brushing, and then use their toothbrush to make sure they get every area.
Either way, it works! We do have 2Tone solution available in our office
for $12 per bottle, and this stuff lasts forever! A great inexpensive way
to train children to do a great job brushing and flossing.

Nervous about dental treatment? Don’t be- so many of our patients use
nitrous oxide to help relax them for their dental procedures, it really makes a
big difference! Nitrous oxide, more commonly called “laughing gas” is
such a great tool for us to use in a dental setting. A rubber nasal hood
is placed over your nose and you simply breathe in and out and enjoy. Laughing
gas is incredibly effective on both children and adults. Nitrous oxide
works very rapidly – it reaches the brain within 20 seconds, and relaxation and
pain-killing properties develop after 2 or 3 minutes. The depth of
sedation can be altered from moment to moment, allowing the person who
administers the gas to increase or decrease the depth of sedation so that we
can help you achieve just the right amount of comfort. There’s no
“hangover” effect – the gas is eliminated from the body within 3 to 5 minutes
after the gas supply is stopped. You can safely drive home and don’t need an
escort.

So many patients tell us that that they hate the way their old gray fillings
look and wish there was something they could do about them. The older
style amgalgam or “gray” fillings are definitely not cosmetic
restorations! The average amalgam filling lasts for about 5-15 years, so
it may be time for an update. Over the years fillings may start to leak
around their edges due to normal wear and trauma. It is also very common
for teeth to develop cracks that radiate from the old fillings through tooth
structure that can eventually lead to big problems. The good news is that
we can easily replace old fillings with new tooth colored composite or porcelain
restorations. The modern materials we use today are much more aesthetic
than those used in years past! Call our office and we can set up a
consultation to discuss what would be best for you. (225) 925-2273

Although most people know that smoking raises the risk of lung cancer, you
may not realize that it is also related to periodontitis, oral cancer, and poor
prognoses for implants and periodontal treatment. Most people who smoke
want to quit, but have a difficult time doing so. November 19th, 2015 is
the American Cancer Society’s “Great American Smokeout” and they are
offering lots of programs and support to help you finally stop smoking and
improve your health. Call for support 1(800)227-2345. cancer.org/smokeout

Cold sores will usually start to heal on their own within a few days and
then disappear within a few weeks. However, if they cause pain or make
you feel self-conscious, they can be treated. Conventional treatments may
include skin creams, ointments, or sometimes pills which may only get rid of
cold sores 1-2 days faster. A more effective way to treat cold sores is
through laser therapy.
If you catch the lesion in time with laser treatment, you can prevent the
cold sore from breaking out. As soon as you feel that tingling sensation
that warns you of an oncoming sore, schedule an appointment for a laser
treatment. If you already have a full blown sore, the laser will take
away the discomfort and help it to dry up and heal much faster.
The herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores cannot be cured.
After you get infected, the virus stays in your body for the rest of your
life. If you get cold sores often, treatment can reduce the number of
cold sores you get and how severe they are. It often happens that people
will get cold sores that reoccur in the same spot every time. After being
treated with a laser multiple times, there is a good chance that a sore won’t
appear again in that spot.
Benefits of using a laser in treating cold sores:
-high tech, yet affordable, and often covered by insurance
-laser energy destroys the virus that causes the sore
-relief is immediate and profound
-helps prevent the outbreak of the sore if treated in the tingling stage
-arrests the progression of the lesion after treatment
-faster healing without further discomfort through photo-biostimulation
-treatment takes just a few minutes and requires no anesthesia
-after treatment, sores reoccur with less intensity and frequency at the
same location

So many people are afraid of the dentist because
of the dreaded “shot”. Of course, everyone wants to be numb for
their procedure…but getting there can be scary. That’s why we employ this
great new tool called “Buzzy”. Buzzy was created by an ER physician for
pain control in children, and reduces injection pain by 50-80%. It was
developed based on the Gate Control Theory of pain -using the body’s own
nervous system, the gate control theory invokes the concept that the final
common pathway for sharp pain to the brain can be shut out by the nerves that
transmit cold and vibration senses. Just as running a burn under cold water
stops the sharp pain, or rubbing a bumped elbow stops the pain, simultaneously
stimulating vibration and cold receptors can dull or eliminate pain.
Buzzy has cold wings and its body gently vibrates against your face- so that’s
what you feel instead of needles. Dr. Griffon also uses a specially
compounded topical anesthetic to numb tissue before injections. The extra
strong topical anesthetic, special injection techniques, and Buzzy together
provide patients with virtually pain-free numbing experience.
